Privacy Policy

Effective date: November 2, 2026

This policy covers backroadwebdesign.com, including the free site audit. Back Road Web Design is Michael Venia’s business in San Luis Obispo, California. Questions about it go to me at michael@backroadwebdesign.com.

What I collect

When you fill out a form or use the audit tool:

Contact form: your first name, email address, what you’re interested in, and your message.

Strategy audit form: your name, email address, website address, your question, and the areas you pick.

Newsletter form: your email address.

Site audit tool: the website address you enter and the audit results. If you ask me to email the PDF, your email address too.

If you call, text, or email me, I get whatever you send, along with your phone number or email address. A link to call, text, or email only opens your own phone or email app, and what you write doesn’t pass through this website.

The form tool also records your IP address, browser, and device with each submission. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that forms are being sent by real visitors, and it may process limited device and browser information to do that. Details are in the Turnstile privacy addendum.

What I use it for

I use this information to reply to you, run the audit, send what you asked for, do client work, keep spam out, keep business records, and measure and improve my marketing.

After you use the contact, audit, or newsletter form, you may get an email asking you to confirm joining my email list. You’re only added if you confirm. In the audit tool, you’re only added if you tick the box. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link.

Analytics, advertising, and cookies

This site uses the tools below. They start when a page loads, set cookies or similar storage in your browser, and give your browser an ID so visits can be counted over time. Most of them also receive your IP address, device and browser details, the page you’re on, and how you got there.

Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager show me how the site is used: which pages get viewed, how people arrive, and actions like clicking a phone link or sending a form. Google signals is on, which adds data from people signed in to a Google account who have consented to ad personalization. Automatic detection of user-provided data is also on, so Google’s tag may detect details such as an email address or phone number. Google explains how it uses this data here.

Google Ads tags measure whether ads lead to inquiries and can add visitors to remarketing lists, whether or not an ad campaign is running.

Meta Pixel tells Meta, which runs Facebook and Instagram, about page views and actions on this site, such as sending a form, whether or not an ad campaign is running. It’s set up with automatic advanced matching, which can send Meta hashed versions of details such as an email address, name, or phone number, so Meta can try to match a visit to a person. Hashing scrambles a value, but it doesn’t make it anonymous. Meta explains its practices in its privacy policy.

Amplitude shows me how people use the site: page views, visits, what’s shown on screen, and interactions with forms. In my testing it recorded which form fields were used, not what was typed into them. Its session replay feature is not recording. Amplitude explains its practices in its privacy policy.

Cloudflare Web Analytics measures how pages perform.

Tracking across other sites

Google and Meta can collect information about what you do on this site and combine it with what you do on other websites and apps over time, and they can use it for their advertising services.

This site doesn’t respond to browser Do Not Track signals, and it takes no action of its own on Global Privacy Control. Google’s tag may respond to Global Privacy Control in some states, not including California.

Who receives information

Besides the tools above, these companies help me run the site and the business:

Cloudways hosts the site. Cloudflare protects the site, checks forms, and runs the audit tool. Google provides Fonts, and PageSpeed Insights receives the website address you enter in the audit tool. A small Meta script loads through unpkg. Mailchimp holds the email list. Resend delivers audit emails. My email provider receives form notifications and anything you email me, and I use other tools to deliver client work.

I may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect my rights or someone’s safety.

I don’t sell your personal information for money. Google and Meta do receive data through the tags described above, for measurement and advertising, and some privacy laws can treat that as a sale or as sharing.

How long I keep it

Form messages and email: for as long as I need them to answer you, do any work you hire me for, and keep business records.

Google Analytics data: 14 months.

Audit results and PDFs: 30 days.

An email address given for an audit PDF: 90 days, unless you also joined the email list.

IP addresses used to limit audit requests: up to 24 hours.

Google Ads, Meta, and Amplitude keep data under their own policies.

Your choices

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Forms may stop working if you block everything.

To limit Google, use My Ad Center and the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

To limit Meta, use the ad settings in your Facebook or Instagram account. You can also opt out of interest-based ads from participating companies through the Digital Advertising Alliance.

Email michael@backroadwebdesign.com to ask what I have about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. I’ll reply as soon as I can. You won’t be treated differently for asking.

California’s Consumer Privacy Act applies to businesses above certain size limits, and I don’t believe this business meets them. I handle these requests anyway.

Outside the United States

I run this site from California for businesses in the United States. The companies listed above may process information in the United States and other countries.

Children

This site is not directed to children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has sent me information, email me and I’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If I change this policy, I’ll update the effective date at the top. If a change is significant, I’ll also put a notice on this page.
